NBA Finals

The finals of the National Basketball Association, better known as NBA, have been in charge of facing the two greatest powers of world basketball for many years. In them, each of the series for the title of the maximum champion have been played for the best of seven games and the champions of the Eastern and Western Conferences.

However, a few years ago, specifically in 1949, the playoffs were held as a three-stage tournament in which various teams from the Basketball Association of America participated. With the arrival of the end of the decade and after the union of the BAA with the NBL (National Basketball League), there was a reordering of the NBA into three divisions.

In this way, the team that obtained the best balance in the regular season, after the division finals, automatically advanced to the NBA finals. For their part, the other two teams had to meet in the semi-finals of the league in order to select the other opponent. After a year, the system of confrontation between the champions of the West division and the East division was officially established.

These were known as divisions until 1970, when their names were changed to conferences. In addition to this, after the grouping of the aforementioned leagues, the team that received the title of champion, would also obtain the famous Larry O’Brien trophy (in honor of the late former commissioner of the NBA) and the precious ring of champions, detail that each franchise confers on whoever they think deserves it.

The current holders of such award are Los Angeles Lakers. Today, the Eastern conference surpasses its opponent, the Western conference, in series won, with a score of 36-29. The now defunct Central Division, could hardly win a championship while it was constituted. In addition, it should be noted that the current format of 2-2-1-1-1 matches was established again as of 2014.

In the past, it was only used during the periods: 1947-1948, 1950-1952, 1957-1970, 1972-1974, 1976-1977, and 1979-1984. The format known as 2-3-2 was used in the years 1949, 1953-1955 and 1985-2013. As for the 1-2-2-1-1 format, it was only imposed between 1975 and 1978. Lastly, the least used of all, the 1–1–1–1–1–1 format, in force in 1956 and 1971.
