How much time has the planet left

How much time does the planet have left? The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has said: only twelve years left to change the direction we take, stop climate change and save the planet.

They expressed it in 2018, during a meeting called in New York by Antonio Guterres, Secretary General of the United Nations Organization. Guterres asked world leaders to come up with concrete plans, not speeches, because the Paris Agreement «not enough to stop climate change».

In your opinion, more aggressive plans are required to reduce emissions by 45% over the next decade and reach 0% by 2050. But,we are all aware of how much time the planet has left? And, more importantly,we are all willing to do something about it?

Worried about how much time the planet has left

Paris Agreement

It was reached at the Paris Climate Conference (COP21), during which 195 countries signed a binding agreement on climate. It was about first binding global agreement to reduce global warming. Among the agreements that were reached are:

  • Reduce global emissions to keep the global average temperature rise below 2 ° C above pre-industrialization levels.
  • Maintain transparency and global reach of the actions that are carried out. To that end, they decided to evaluate progress through transparent accountability and keep all governments and citizens informed.
  • Offer help to developing countries to rapidly reduce their emissions and strengthen their ability to cope with the consequences of climate change.
  • Cooperation and support in early warning systems, emergency preparedness and insurance against risks.

The Paris Agreement was formally ratified by the European Union on October 5, 2015, entering into force in November 2016.

Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change 2018

In their report last year, they highlight that a global warming of 1.5 ° C will have consequences and costs much worse than expected. In other words, the estimate of 2 ° C considered in the 2015 Paris Conference is still very high, given the events that have occurred. Only with an increase of 1 ° C, there were storms, wildfires, droughts, coral bleaching, heat waves and floods never seen.

They also point out that we are already in debt to the planetSo even if we did achieve a total reduction immediately, it would only delay reaching warming 2 ° C. They look like small values locally, but globally these increases will have devastating effects in natural ecosystems and in human communities. And according to one of the authors of the report, «stabilize global warming at 1.5 ° C it will be very difficult, if not impossible». So how much time does the planet have left?

Fourth United Nations Environment Assembly

During last March it was held in the city of Nairobi, Kenya. It had more than 4,700 participants, among heads of state, ministers, business leaders, United Nations officials and representatives of civil society. The motto was «Innovative solutions for environmental challenges and sustainable production and consumption ”.

With this idea in mind, the objective of the discussions was to reach bold decisions and results, to pressure governments to take action now. Adopt sustainable consumption and production patterns, protect marine ecosystems from plastic pollution, reduce food waste, reduce the exploitation of natural resources. What’s more, promote innovation and the development of new technologies that help solve the problems.

Within the framework of the Assembly, the third One Planet Summit was also held, organized by the World Bank Group in order to offer your support for adaptation and mitigation of climate change in East Africa. With your help he seeks to increase the use of renewable energy, protect biodiversity and promote adaptation and resilience before the change.

How much time does the planet have left? Alarming data

Plastic in the oceans

Greenpeace Spain has produced a dossier in which they point to figures almost impossible to believe. With these data, we certainly must ask ourselves how much time the planet has left if …

  • Eight million tons of plastic they annually end up in the seas and oceans, representing up to 80% of marine litter. The greatest damage lies in the microplastics, that is to say particles smaller than 5mm very difficult to capture. Plastic in the oceans equals 800 times the weight of the Eiffel Tower.
  • The largest proportion –70% – is deposited in the sea bottom; 15% remains suspended in the water column and another 15% remains floating on the surface.
  • There are five garbage islands: two in the Pacific, two in the Atlantic and one in the Indian Ocean.
  • By 2020 a 900% increase in the rate of plastic production compared to production in 1980.
  • ANDn Spain, 30 million cans and bottles are discarded every day that do not get to be recycled.

Other numbers to reflect on how much time the planet has left

During the third One Planet Summit, it was revealed other not so widespread data. However, they should also make us reflect about how much time the planet has left if we continue at the same pace and with the same style of consumption.

  • In 2017, 90 billion metric tons of Earth’s resources, and only 10% was recycled.
  • For the manufacture of mobile phones are used 60 different metals, which include graphite, selenium and gold, their harmful extraction for the environment. And that’s without talking harm to people
  • In addition to the damage caused by manufacturing, electronic waste produced by this industry reach 45 million metric tons. Only 20% is recycled.

And then, we have to ask ourselves againHow much time does the planet have left? Tick, tock, tick, tock …
