Eosinophils: What is their Function and Normal Values

First described in 1879 by Paul Ehrlich, the eosinophils They are a type of white blood cell or leukocyte whose origin is found in the bone marrow.

Its main function is to support the immune system when it comes to dealing with viruses, bacteria and even parasites. Once they are formed, they pass into the blood where they will circulate for a period of between 9 and 12 days, after that, they pass to different tissues such as the lymph nodes, the intestines or the respiratory tract.

What is its function in the body?

The purpose of eosinophils is to work together with the rest of the leukocytes when facing an infection of any kind. When the presence of a virus, bacteria or parasites in the body is detected, the levels of these types of blood cells are increased to deal with it.

They are a type of phagocytic cell and they show great attraction to complexes of antigens and antibodies. This is the reason why in most cases they are strongly attracted to the chemotaxis. In the same way, it has been possible to appreciate their attraction to substances related to the family of basophils, as the histamine.

They are one of the main regulators of allergies due to their ability to block and neutralize histamine through histaminase. Although they are phagocytic cells, they can also help against microorganisms not swallowable, thanks to the fact that they can make use of a cytotoxic function. Another of the functions that they exercise in the human body is to fight parasites such as schistosomiasis or bilharziasis, these lymphocytes can adhere to this class of parasites and kill their larvae.

From the point of view of doctors, they are very useful for the diagnosis of some diseases, this is because, through the symptoms and variations in their blood levels, specialists can have an idea of ​​what type of infection is against face.

What are normal values ​​for eosinophils?

The normal blood eosinophil values ​​should be 300 for each microliter of blood. On average, children have a higher concentration of 400 eosinophils for each micro liter, while an adult man should have approximately 200 for each liter.

To count this type of white blood cell, the first thing to do is take a blood sample and perform a complete blood test. This sample is taken by drawing blood from the back of the hand or the front of the elbow with a syringe. After this we proceed to the blood analysis where we can see what the value of the eosinophils is, if the results indicate very high or very low values ​​it is possible that additional tests such as tomography, stool or urine analysis are required, among others.

  • Eosinophils are considered elevated when their value exceeds 400 or 450 for each microliter of blood, this is called eosinophilia.
  • Eosinophils are considered low when their level is below 50, which is called eosinopenia.

Eosinophils play a fundamental role in the immune system, they can help fight all kinds of infections, they can also serve to alert us that something is not working well in our body.
